    What is Compliance & Monitoring?

    Compliance and monitoring is a process using guidelines and procedures to ensure that the, legislation, industry policies, standards and rules that govern an establishment are adhered to, as it is essential to verify that a gaming activities function smoothly and continue to do so. Its purpose is to manage, develop and implement the regulatory compliance in line with the Gambling Act and its regulations

    Function of Compliance and Monitoring Unit?

    The Compliance and Monitoring Unit is responsible for the regulation and supervision of gambling activities and entities in Botswana. This is done through enforcing the Gambling Act of 2012 and its Regulations.

    The Gambling Act is a Supervisory Authority of casinos in Botswana as provided for under the Financial Intelligence Act, 2022. The Unit therefore, ensures that licensees comply with the FinanciaI Intelligence Act and its Regulations as well as the Financial Intelligence (Implementation Of United Nations Security Council Resolutions) Regulations, of 2022 .

    The Unit also continuously monitors the environment for illegal gambling activities and liaise with relevant Authorities to take remedial action against such operations

    Functions of the unit include:

    Onsite and offsite inspections and monitoring
    Levy verification
    Enforcement
    Resolving customer complaints
    Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT)/Counter Financing of Proliferation (CFP)

    Why is compliance & monitoring done?

    • To ensure compliance with all governing legislation, including ensuring that operations are within the legal spectrum, and all other social and economic (credibility and integrity) considerations in line with the development objectives of the Republic of Botswana.

    Types of Inspections

    • The Inpectors carry out different types of inspections on a risk based approach. The types of inspections are as follows:

      1. Preliminary Inspections
      2. Preopening inspections
      3. General Inspections
      4. Targeted Inspections
      5. Adhoc Inspections
